Keep a human in charge
AI assistants are great at drafts, summaries and ideas. But they can be confidently wrong, and they cannot take responsibility. Use AI to help, and keep a person (you) making the final call on these things:
Don’t hand these off without checking
- Payments and money. Never let an AI tool send money, approve invoices or change bank details on its own. Check every amount and recipient yourself.
- Legal and compliance. AI can explain a contract in plain words or draft a first version, but it is not a lawyer. Have a qualified person review anything you sign or file.
- Hiring and people decisions. Use AI to draft job posts or interview questions, not to decide who gets hired, promoted or let go. Those decisions need a human, and in many places the law requires it.
- Sensitive personal data. Don’t paste health records, SIN or Social Security numbers, passwords, bank details or other people’s private information into a chat. See Is my data safe? for each tool’s privacy setting.
- Publishing under your name. Read every word before you post, send or publish. You are responsible for what goes out, not the tool.
- Big decisions. Medical, financial, legal or life choices: use AI to prepare questions and understand options, then talk to a professional.
Always double-check facts and numbers
AI can invent sources, quotes, dates and figures that look real. Before you rely on an answer:
- Ask the AI for its sources, then open them yourself.
- Recalculate any important number (totals, percentages, dates).
- Check names, prices and opening hours on the official website.
- If it matters, ask a second tool or a person.
A simple rule
AI drafts, you decide. If a mistake would cost money, break a law, hurt someone or embarrass you, check it before it leaves your hands.
